History: The Viñales meteorite is an ordinary L6 chondrite, formed more than 4.5 billion years ago, during the earliest moments of the Solar System. Its structure displays a highly recrystallized matrix, with metallic minerals and molten silicates that tell the story of the impacts and internal processes its parent body underwent before reaching Earth. The fall was a striking spectacle: witnesses described a brilliant fireball that crossed the western Cuban sky, accompanied by explosions and a smoke trail visible for kilometers. The recovered fragments not only allow us to study the composition of these ancient bodies but also offer a direct connection to the early past of the Solar System, allowing us to literally hold a piece of cosmic history in our hands. This event marked a milestone in Cuban meteoritics, being the most significant impact recorded in the country to date, and a unique example of how meteorites can bring us closer to the study of the formation of planets and asteroids.
