History: Meteorite NWA 14793 is a CV3-type carbonaceous chondrite, one of the most primitive and least altered types in existence. These rocks are true cosmic fossils that have traveled through space for more than 4.5 billion years, preserving within them secrets about the formation of planets and the chemistry that may have given rise to life. Its name comes from the "Northwest Africa" designation used to identify meteorites recovered from this vast, desert region of northwest Africa, where it was discovered in 2021. At first glance, NWA 14793 is already fascinating: its surface shows perfectly defined chondrules, small spheres formed by crystals of minerals such as olivine and pyroxene that rapidly solidified in the solar nebula. These chondrules are embedded in a dense, mineralized matrix that also shows evidence of aqueous alteration processes, indicating that this fragment was exposed to liquid water on its parent asteroid.
