In the Holzmaden region, so-called "Posidonia" shales are present behind the ground. This formation originates from a tropical sea. There were several quarries in the area between the cities of Holzmaden - Ohmden - Schlierbach - Zell, which were gradually closed over the last few years. There are now only 2 quarries left, one operated only for private fossil collectors (paid access). (Source: Paleontica)
