History: Meteorite NWA 15523 is a true rarity from deep space. It was found in the Sahara in 2022 by local prospectors exploring the Hassi Khebi region. Its name, like that of many meteorites found in this area, comes from the generic term NWA (Northwest Africa) followed by a catalog number. What makes this meteorite so special is its extremely ancient origin; it formed more than 4.5 billion years ago, even before the Earth as we know it existed. It belongs to the rare category of CM2 carbonaceous chondrites, meteorites that preserve primitive organic matter, such as amino acids, the very building blocks of life. Although its size is not large—the total recovered mass barely reaches 780 grams—each fragment is a cosmic treasure steeped in history. Its dark interior and powdery texture are reminiscent of volcanic rocks, but its true value lies in what it represents: the original material of the solar system, unchanged since its beginnings. Despite being a very recent discovery, NWA 15523 has already sparked the interest of collectors and space enthusiasts due to its similarity to the famous Murchison meteorite, one of the most important rocks ever to fall to Earth. More than 70 types of amino acids and basic sugars, essential ingredients for life, were found inside, which did not originate on Earth. Like Murchison, the NWA 15523 meteorite is a CM2 carbonaceous chondrite, and its primitive chemical composition makes each fragment an intact capsule from the birth of the solar system and a possible clue to the origin of life on our planet.
