 History: In January 2022, near the town of Laâyoune in Western Sahara, meteorite hunters found several fragments that turned out to be from our satellite. This is a feldspathic breccia, a type of rock originating from the lunar highlands, ancient and heavily cratered areas of the crust. Regolith, a mixture of dust and rock fragments, covers these regions and is incorporated into the breccia. Asteroid impacts generate extreme pressures and temperatures that melt and weld fragments of feldspar-rich minerals, forming these fascinating lunar rocks. The recovered samples weighed about 5.15 kg, and their characteristics allow scientists to study the history of the lunar crust, marked by intense shock processes. Its low degree of alteration on Earth makes it an exceptional specimen for research. Each fragment of Laâyoune 002 connects us directly to the geology of our natural satellite and offers us the unique opportunity to touch an authentic piece of the lunar surface here on Earth.
